Mice Are Not Nice

As the summer weather begins to cool down you may find some unwelcome guests entering your home. Rodent season begins in August and runs through late October, with August 15  through September 30 being the optimal time for them to intrude. That’s when mice and other rodents begin to search for a warm space to hunker down for the winter.

Places to look for mice:

  • Attics
  • Walls
  • Crawl Spaces
  • Basements
  • Areas behind cabinets
  • Air ducts or vent systems
  • Insulation

Key signs you may have mice:

  • Droppings in the backs of drawers
  • Chew marks on sideboards, furniture, or food packages
  • Scratching noises within your walls
  • Stale smells coming from hidden areas.

Tips to help keep mice out:

  • Keep your kitchen clean!

Thoroughly vacuum all areas of your home and pay special attention to your kitchen, pantry areas, and wherever food tends to accumulate. Be sure to store all food items in the refrigerator and plastic sealable containers.

  • Repair leaks - don’t let mice rehydrate in your home.

Repair any leaky pipes, sinks, tubs, and toilets. Make sure there are no areas of standing water around your house that mice can use as a water source.

  • Keep them out!

Inspect the outside of your home, especially your foundation, exterior walls, and roof areas for any gaps, cracks, or holes. If you find any openings be sure to seal them up. No hole is too small -remember, mice can fit through a hole the size of a pencil point!
