BEE Aware This Summer

Many people are allergic to bees, wasp, and hornet stings, and their stings are extremely excruciating. Every year, some 8 million people -- approximately 1 in 30 get stung every year.  About 5 percent of adults are allergic to these insect stings and an average of 62 people in the U.S. die from insect stings each year.

Wasps include Yellow Jackets (which most people think are called “bees”), Polistes Wasps, and Hornets.  They are a dangerous presence on your property when they have a nest to defend. A few around the garden don’t pose a threat, but if they are going in and out of a hole in or near your house, they likely have built a nest.  That could mean more than 20,000 stinging insects are living inside your walls.

Tips to protect yourself from bee-ing stung:

  • Keep food and drinks covered when eating outdoors.
  • Avoid wearing bright colors or floral prints.
  • Avoid excessive use of fragrances
  • Be careful when mowing the lawn or trimming around your home.
  • Seal cracks and crevices.
  • Do not swat!
