How and When Cold-Season Pests Get Into Your Home 

Watch out for stink bugs and other overwintering pests, such as cluster flies and Asian lady beetles, once temperatures drop below 70°F. That’s when they start searching for a cozy place to survive the cold months. Unfortunately, your home’s walls, attic, and hidden cracks make the perfect winter getaway for these pests.

How Do Stink Bugs Cause Problems in Your Home?

Stink bugs generally don’t bite or cause structural damage, but they do release a foul odor when crushed or disturbed (which is how they’ve earned their name!). In addition, they secrete pheromones to alert other stink bugs as to where they are, which is why they can frequently be found congregating. Once a few of these pests find a good hiding spot, more are likely to follow.

When Does Stink Bug Season Start?

Stink bug activity typically spikes from mid-to-late August through September. On sunny afternoons, you might notice them congregating on the warm sides of your home, particularly near windows, siding, or doors. When the weather shifts, they enter through cracks and crevices in siding, around windows, doors, and other openings.

Tips to Keep Stink Bugs Out of Your Home

●       Seal entry points: Inspect siding, vents, utility pipes, window frames, and door thresholds.

●       Check screens: Repair torn window or door screens that stink bugs can slip through.

●       Limit outdoor lighting: Stink bugs are attracted to light; turn off unneeded outdoor fixtures at night or switch to yellow bulbs.

●       Reduce hiding spots: Clear away yard debris, weeds, and firewood piles near the house where stink bugs might gather.

●       Use a vacuum (carefully): If a few get indoors, avoid crushing them. Instead, vacuum them up, but remember to empty the vacuum bag quickly to prevent any lingering odors.
