It’s Lyme Disease Awareness Month and Officially Peak Tick Season!

This year's tick season kicked off early following a mild winter with much warmer temperatures than usual, significantly increasing insect activity and reproduction. So it’s no surprise that emergency rooms throughout the region are now reporting the highest number of tick bite cases and tickborne diseases, like Lyme disease, in recent years. 

The JP McHale Pest Management team is greatly committed to our efforts to mitigate threats posed by Lyme Disease and other tick-borne illnesses within the communities we serve. 

Understanding Lyme Disease:

Lyme Disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is the most prevalent vector-borne disease.

Recognizing Symptoms:

Lyme Disease symptoms include fever, headaches, fatigue, and a distinct rash often characterized by a red center surrounded by a clear ring, resembling a bullseye.

Preventive Measures:

• Dress for Defense: Wear long pants and sleeves when venturing into tick habitats.

• Stick to Cleared Paths: Avoid wooded and brushy areas with dense foliage and leaf litter (prime tick habitats). When hiking, remain in the center of the trails.

• Maintain your Lawn: Cut your grass frequently as ticks do not thrive in short vegetation. 

• Create a Barrier: Utilize wood chips to form a 3-foot barrier around the perimeter of your yard to keep ticks out. 

• Conduct Regular Checks: Perform thorough body checks after potential exposure to tick-infested environments, including your backyard.

• Protect Pets: Make sure to give your pet FDA-approved tick prevention medication each month, and always inspect them for ticks after playing outside, paying close attention to areas like ears, eyelids, collar, legs, toes, and tail.

Introducing Our Breakthrough LymeGuard+ Program featuring LymeShield

LymeShield is an innovative scientific program proven to reduce the number of ticks that can infect humans with a tick-borne illness by eliminating Lyme disease in the majority of mice. LymeShield works as a feeder that gives mice access to Lyme vaccine pellets based on a programmable schedule.
