Bed Bug Update: Why Are There More Bed Bugs in the North Than the South?

Although there is plenty of information on bed bugs, including how to treat them and how they behave, one thing we still don’t quite understand is why they infest some cities and areas of the country more than others. We know that bed bugs reproduce and enjoy warmer conditions, which would suggest that the South is a haven for them, however, this is not the case. After some in depth research, a recent study found that northern cities may have more bed bug infestations than southern cities.

In 2013, it was reported that the pest control companies that generated the most revenue from bed bug services were those located in the Northeast. So, why do cities in the Northeast seem to be dealing with more bed bug infestations compared to other cities across the U.S.? It could be for a couple of reasons, including:

  • High population and high-rise buildings. There are more cities in the North that have higher concentrations of people in small areas when compared to the South.
  • Lack of air conditioning. Because it gets uncomfortably hot in the summer in the South, many housing communities will supply air conditioning. In the North, there are less housing communities that supply air conditioning, due to shorter heat waves and a smaller need to provide cool air. In non-conditioned properties, bed bugs can reproduce and spread quicker than properties that are air conditioned.
