How To Get Rid Of Ants Naturally In The House

For many homes and businesses, the summer season doesn’t really get underway until the first ant infestation arises. The problem is, these pests may be small, but they can cause a wide range of major problems that can range from irritating bites to lost customers to actual structural damage to your property. Don’t think that just because they’re ants that they can’t be harmful. Every insect infestation brings with it the potential for expensive problems.

If you’re suffering from an infestation of ants, but you don’t want to harm the environment or your pets by using harsh pesticides, then here are some tips for how to get rid of ants naturally in a house, apartment, or business.

First Step – Clean the Home Thoroughly

Ants infiltrate the home because they can sense food, especially sweets and proteins. So, if your child spills soda and doesn’t clean it up or you leave a banana past its prime on your counter, then you’re putting out the welcome mat for ants (and other pests). Therefore, before you treat your home for ants, you need to give all of the surfaces in your home a complete cleaning.

After cleaning, you will want to store all open sweets and proteins in tightly sealed containers or in the refrigerator. Keep counter-tops clean at all times and you should wipe up spills immediately and wash your dishes instead of leaving them sit in the sink. Your garbage should also be emptied regularly and before you throw out food cartons, be sure to wash them out. The floors should be regularly vacuumed and mopped to make sure there are no crumbs available.

Top Natural Ways to Get Rid of Ants

Essential Oils – Before ants invade your home, the colony sends out scout ants to see what’s available for them to eat. As the scout ants make their way back to the colony, they leave a pheromone trail that the other ants will use to find their way into your home. Placing a few drops of essential oil along your baseboards or ant entry points will interfere with their pheromone trails. Effective oils to choose from include peppermint, clove, tea tree, lemon, or orange. Keep in mind that these need to be genuine essential oils in order for them to work, not artificial-scented oils.

You can even make a spray mix using the essential oils that works as a highly effective ant repellant. Simply mix 15 drops of tea tree oil, 7 drops of your choice of citrus oil, a ¼ cup of purified water, and a ¼ cup of vodka in a spray bottle. Then, simply spray it along your floorboards or anywhere where you see ants. If you’re going to be spraying near food preparation areas, then omit the tea tree oil from the solution and use peppermint oil instead.

Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth – Boric acid is an effective ant killer, but if you have kids, then you want to use diatomaceous earth (DE) instead of boric acid. Simply sprinkle a thin layer of the powder on your windowsills, under the cabinets, beneath the refrigerator, inside the garbage can, and around areas where you have seen ants. If you’re using it inside your home it is important to use FOOD-GRADE DE. Regular DE is not safe to breate, but food-grade DE is.

Vinegar Spray – Vinegar is a miracle cure for a host of problems, even ants! Simply mix together a ¼ cup of white or apple cider vinegar, a ¼ cup of water, and 15 to 30 drops of one of the above mentioned essential oils into a spray bottle. All you have to do is shake the bottle to make sure everything is mixed and then spray along your floorboards and anywhere you have seen ants. Apply a fresh coating of the mix every other day until you don’t see any more ants.
