Actors Turning in to Bed Bug hunters? No this is no movie role, this is real. Bed Bug Busters of NY is now turning to actors from the New York City area to help with the growing creepy crawler problem. Janet Freidman, owner of Bed Bug Busters says “Actors have great personalities and follow directions well.” Also claiming that the entertainers are good because they can improvise, work quickly, and are used to the drama of a stressful situation.
Apparently the ability to perform and be successful in acting has a correlation with hunting for bed bugs in tough locations.
“The performance aspect, the training that most of us have in our own field, definitely helps when you have one of those more difficult places to go to,”
says Meagan Gililand, a 25 year old actress. It’s a great gig for a chance at meeting “high up” people in the New York scene as well, possibly even better than waiting tables. These young actors first must de-clutter, clean, wash and vacuum the house, preparing it for the only solution to the bugs; Pest Management Professionals who come in and eradicate the insects.

The NYC Niketown store is now back open to the public after a brief closing due a large infestation of bed bugs. Four days after it had to close its New York City store due to bed bugs, it is back open. While this is disastrous for their retail sales during the week, it can’t be viewed as surprising. In recent months the numbers of calls pest control companies and help lines have increased dramatically. Some estimate that the number of calls to help lines have risen 50% this year. Early in the summer another, smaller, Nike retail store was shut down briefly due to bed bugs. New York City has been proactive about the severity of the widespread bed bug infestation and have launched a program of information and prevention to help combat New York’s new problem.

According to several pest control companies in the New York City area, bed bugs are becoming more prominent in commercial buildings such as: Office buildings, hotels and clothing stores. Known for being a pest in bed, bed bugs have found themselves invading mostly any building that harbors carpet, excess fabrics and furniture.
Recently stores in New York City such as Abercrombie and Fitch & Hollister have had to shut down local branches due to their bed bug infestation. Not even government run buildings can escape the wrath of the bed bug. The Mid-Manhattan branch of New York’s Public Library system had a growing bed bug problem. While the reasoning for their increasing numbers is not completely known, theories of increased international travel may be the cause. Experts state that bed bugs are “incredible hitchhikers” and can be easily picked up by unknowing strangers.

While we have seen a widespread increase in bed bug reports across the nation, it seems that our own Tri-state area is being hit harder than mostly anywhere in the country. With newer, and more widespread problems of bed bugs in the New York Metropolitan area, it is time for prevention and control tactics to evolve with the bug problem. Usually used in the crime scene area for the detection of drugs and/or bodies, dogs are now being trained to help in the pest extermination business. Dogs are being trained for hundreds of hours to be able to detect the presence of bed bugs around households and commercial buildings.
If we look at just the increase of sales coming from eliminating bed bugs in the past three years we see clearly the significant increase of bed bugs in this country. In 2006 the sales numbers for eliminating these pests was $98 million while in 2009 it jumped to $258 million dollars. With the addition of the new bed bug sniffers, pest control companies can eliminate the tedious work of disinfecting the whole house/commercial area. Not only does this save precious man hours, it saves the
customer a pretty penny in extermination fees. J.P. McHale, president of Buchanan, Westchester County based J.P. McHale Pest Management, states that the bed bugs can live up to a year without eating and can crawl in and out of cracks in the wall or in your luggage. McHale, who’s company is partnering with White Plains-based Inspector K-9, states that, “The dogs do a great job of identifying low-level infestation that may not be detected by the human eye.”
With continued education to the people and the evolution of new tactics of prevention and extermination of bed bugs, the number of bed bugs should be on the downfall. The addition of newly trained dogs that have the nose for spotting these critters will help pest companies to eliminate the problem faster while saving the consumer from writing a pronounced check.

Yesterday, our friends over at K-9 Sweeps showed us an article from Times Online about the rise of bed bug cases in New York. The article interviews a woman of the middle class who lives in a four bedroom apartment in New York City. She has been battling bed bugs for 5 months! She and her husband were horrified once they discovered them and the costs to treat them ran up to $15,000! They tried to use pesticides and constantly vacuumed and cleaned to get rid of them, but they still came back. Her most gruesome experience in the five months was when she would see the bed bugs, who are 4-5 mm in size, turn bright red after feasting on human blood. Bed bugs have increased tremendously in the past years. The number one reason for the spread of them is travel. Hotels are the main place where people pick up bed bugs. Whenever you stay at a hotel, check for bed bugs! The five to ten minute inspection will pay off tremendously. Make sure you check under the mattress, in the cracks of bed frames and draws, and around picture frames and windows. Never put your clothes in the draws because bed bugs can easily travel into your suitcase if they are stationed in a dresser. The elimination of bed bugs is very pricy if you try and do it yourself. Here at JP McHale we offer a bed bug inspection by human, which is 60% effective, or canine, which is 90% effective, to detect bed bugs in a home. From there we will make a proposal to treat them based on where they are and how many we project are in the home. To read more about bed bugs, read out bed bug blog. The NY Daily News mentioned that former president Bill Clintons offices located in Harlem, New York has a bad bed bug infestation.
Bedbugs have sent Bill Clinton and his staff fleeing the former President’s offices, a source tells us. No word on whether WJC actually has a bed in his Harlem suite, but the infestation is said to have been so bad that exterminators told Clintonistas to take a few days off.
As we have been writing about, the bed bug calls are pouring in, and is becoming a very large issue especially for the New York City area.
