A Giant Water Bug (Belostomatidae) is typically found in very warm topical areas of the Americas. They are found near or in fresh water, and hang out at the bottom. The do not live underwater, but enjoy the habitat. They must resurface periodically to get oxygen.
When the Water bug becomes intimidated by a human, they will play dead. When the person is not expecting they can bite a toe. Though this is
painful, it is just a short pain, this is why many people refer to this bug at a “toe-biter.”
The picture to the right shows a male water bug carrying eggs the female laid on his back.
Giant Water Bugs have one of the most painful stings from an insect known.
Did you know, Giant Water Bugs are a popular Thai food?
