Our friends over at K-9 Sweeps posted a news video on eliminating bed bugs.  Like New York, Las Vegas has been battling the bed bug epidemic too.  One tenant in a condo complex got fed up when bug bugs continued to bite her night after night.  News 13 was called in to help.  Management agreed to spray her condo but that is not enough to kill them.  Spraying the room does not get rid of the bed bugs.  Heat is the best approach.  Temperatures that exceed 114 degrees will kill the bugs in any stage.  K-9 Sweeps brought in their bed bug sniffing dog, Sarah, who can detect where all the bed bug hot spots are.  We have a similar dog, Trixie.  The canine dog can sniff where bed bug eggs are, unlike humans that cannot see the tiny particles.  Check out the video!

This morning, ABC News posted an article on the Goldman Sachs’ tower and how it could potentially be infested with bed bugs. Yesterday, our friends over at K-9 Sweeps showed us an article from Times Online about the rise of bed bug cases in New York.  The article interviews a woman of the middle class who lives in a four bedroom apartment in New York City.  She has been battling bed bugs for 5 months!  She and her husband were horrified once they discovered them and the costs to treat them ran up to $15,000!  They tried to use pesticides and constantly vacuumed and cleaned to get rid of them, but they still came back.  Her most gruesome experience in the five months was when she would see the bed bugs, who are 4-5 mm in size, turn bright red after feasting on human blood.  Bed bugs have increased tremendously in the past years.  The number one reason for the spread of them is travel.  Hotels are the main place where people pick up bed bugs.  Whenever you stay at a hotel, check for bed bugs! If you think you aren’t going to be affected by bed bugs at one time or another, you’re probably wrong. Bed bugs infestations are on the rise and they don’t care who they are disturbing. In Franklin County, Ohio especially, where bed bugs have affected not only those low-income renters who originally were thought to be the only ones affected by these pests.

“We’ve had reports from schools, churches, bowling alleys, dialysis centers, and vets offices,” said Paul Wenning, with the Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force.

These bugs don’t care where they are and what kind of furniture their in, as they’ve been found in private residences, couches, and beds as of late. More incredibly, a map including every ZIP code has been created and filled in only two years since the bed bug task force was born. Apartment complexes have been cited in creating certain areas to throw out furniture that has been infected by bed bugs for their residences. The only way to get rid of these pests is to hire a licensed professional, attempting to get rid of these yourself can be frustrating and nearly impossible.

Bed bugs are back after a long 50 year disappearance, and they are hitting New York in huge numbers. Typically found in bedrooms, bed bugs are a nocturnal pest that feed off of the blood of humans. Now that this pest problem is getting worse and worse, we are beginning to see bed bugs in public places such as subways and buses.

Bed bugs are small wingless insects that feed solely upon the blood of warm-blooded animals.  They take residence in small crevices of your house where it is nearly impossible to detect them (places such as stairwells and suitcases, and obviously your bed).  Bed bugs are tiny, just about the size of a poppy seed, and bite human flesh for 3-10 minutes until they are full of blood and content.

About.com wrote an article about bed bugs appearing in upscale hotels. Over the past 10 or so years, bed bugs have reappeared in North America. Bed Bugs feed off human blood, and are nocturnal, only showing themselves when you are sleeping. The hide in sheets, mattresses, headboards, and furniture when they are not feeding.

Because of Integrated Pest Management, IPM, pesticide use has been greatly reduced, and now treatments have become targeted at certain pests. About.com writes…

“Concerns about health and the environment led to many of these broad-spectrum pesticides being removed from the market. Today, pest control methods are more focused, designed to kill a particular species (like cockroaches). Bed bugs, since they are not specifically being treated for, are slipping through the cracks.”

Bed bugs travel in suitcases, and if they are present in a hotel that you sleep in, you most likely will carry them to your next destination.

The most upscale hotel and motels have the same chance of being infested. Sanitation has NO EFFECT on the presence of bed bugs. The only way that a hotel/ motel can prevent bed bug infestations is from weekly or monthly inspections. Years ago this was a tedious and expensive task for hotel and motel management, and time consuming for pest management inspectors. As of the last five years we have seen an increase in K-9 bed bug inspection dogs.

K-9 bed bug inspecting dogs are becoming more popular because they are about 90% effective and cheaper for hotel/ motel management. K-9 inspections will only take about 3-5 minutes a room, while human inspection can take a lot longer and are not as accurate.
