Earlier today the NY Post published an article that talks about the vendors in sports areas and how they are not up to the health code. ESPN surveyed 107 sports areas across the county and the results they found are disturbing. The Version Center in Washington, DC topped the list. 100% of the vendors inside the arena were cited with health violations. Madison Square Garden rated the worst among the New York stadiums with 61% of their vendors being cited. Yankee Stadium and Citi Field rated above MGS, but not by much. Yankee Stadium had 48% of their vendors cited and Citi Field had 45%. The health violations include inspectors finding mouse droppings and roaches in the area where food is being prepared.
Many spectators were interviewed and most of them had the same response. They are going to continue to go to the sporting events, just going to think twice about getting a hot dog. The spectators are also angry at the fact that they pay good money to see the sporting event and feel the least that the stadium could do is provide them with a healthy food vendor. If you have dropping or cockroaches in your home or business, JP McHale can help. We are a Pest Control Company in Westchester New York that serves the tri-state area. Contact us by phone 800-479-2284, email, live chat, twitter, or facebook for an inspection!

Waybright Elementary School in Mass. has recently reopened after a rat sighting caused the school to close for a day. During school, a student saw a rat running down a stairwell. This isn’t the first time the school has had a problem with rats. In December, a construction project disrupted where some rats where living, causing them to go into the school. The school called a pest management professional, sealed off entranceway and set traps. Until they were sure the problem went away, they asked students to not leave food in classrooms and stopped serving hot lunches. They thought the problem was gone until the lone rat was spotted.
There were no signs of more rats being in the school. They didn’t find any feces or rats in traps that would indicate more than the lone rat. During the incident in the winter, there was evidence of burrowing by the rats. However, the building was swept and no burrowing was located this time around. The school reassured everybody that every precaution was taking place to prevent further incidents. They also said this is not an event isolated to just the school. Homes around the area have been having similar problems. The school has spent upwards of $30,000 already clear the rats out of the school, and expects to spend more money in the future.
If you have seen a rat or mouse in your home please contact us for a free inspection. Winter is the most common time to see a rodent in your home.

A famous Los Angeles eatery, Philippes, has been shut down for a couple of days, due to a cockroach infestation. Philippes, which has been open for over 100 years and is famous for its French Dip, was inspected due to several complains. The restaurant has always done well during inspections, and when the county inspectors came and inspected it, it did receive a good score, in the low 90s. Even with the good score, the infestation forced a shut down. The restaurant was forced to fix the infestation, and when inspectors returned in a couple of days, they were to look and make sure the infestation was gone. Once they give the ok, Philippes would reopen.
Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal, and leave behind a chemical trail in their feces. Cockroaches are relatively large insects, and some carry about 40 eggs in each egg capsule they lay. Their life span is only about a year, however, in that time span, they lay up to 8 egg capsules. They feed on human and pet food, leave behind a poor odor and have a hissing sound. The fact that they feed on this food is one of the main reasons that they are such a problem for restaurants. Philippes isn’t the only place that has been hit by this pest, and certainly will not be the last.
Don’t let a cockroach infestation ruin your businesses reputation. Contact JP McHale for a free inspection and quote of your establishment. We are also able to service chain restaurants across the country with our partnership with Copesan.
We heard about this story from the LA Times.

Hospitals in Mullingar, Ireland and Ballinasloe, Ireland have run into a problem over the past 4 years. Different types of rodents and insects (rats, mice, ants, silverfish) have been a common site in these hospitals. 58 total pest control incidents were recorded in the past 4 years between those two hospitals. While mice and rats where the main cause of the 32 pest control calls in Mullingar, Ballinasloe has had the problem of insects on top of it. Ants are a common insect, however silverfish not so much. Silverfish is a wingless insect that usually feeds on adhesives. When no adhesives are in sight, they will eat cotton, linen, and silk, making it a household pest.
These two hospitals aren’t the only ones to have to deal with pests. A hospital in Tullamore, Ireland has possibly an even worse problem. In the same time period, they have experienced 112 pest control calls. There is a logical reason however for this large number. During this time, they were building a new hospital in Tullamore, which tends to lead to more insects and rodents. Since the new hospital is now complete, the calls have reduced significantly. Spokesman for the hospitals have made one thing clear however, that this is a serious issue. They recognize that this is something that needs to be taken care of, and they will be implementing the strategies that they are told at once. After four years of problems at these hospitals, it will be interesting to see if the suggestions eliminate their problems.

Bedbugs created a stir in the media world on Wednesday, giving Universal Music Group, who Jay-Z and Rihanna belong to, and IFC members a scare. An outbreak of bedbugs caused numerous top agents and executives to leave their offices at 825 Eighth Ave, New York City a month ago, while on Wednesday, members of the IFC ran from the creepy crawlers. These bugs live off blood of humans and other warm blooded animals, and are often found in places like hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and can be transmitted via furniture and baggage.
A source claimed, “Universal had its three floors fumigated last month. But this week, a small area of the ICM offices directly below were found to be infested.”
The ICM offices contain agents that rep stars such as Megan Fox, Halle Berry and Mickey Rourke. Apparently, they “even brought in bedbug seeking beagles” to aid the situation. Bedbugs are not known to carry or transmit disease, and are not even considered to be as dangerous as the common flea. These pests can be very difficult to eradicate and can only be completely eliminated by experienced pest management professionals.
Remember that bed bugs do not discriminate and are not a “dirty” pest. Anyone can get them, sanitation is not a factor. If you suspect that you have bed bugs, please contact us so our K-9 bed bug inspection dog can come out and check to see if there is an infestation in your home or place of business.

1,500 cases of candy and snacks were destroyed in an unlicensed Wisconsin warehouse this week because of a serious rodent infestation.
“For a case to have gotten to this point will tell you it was pretty darn serious.” -FDA Spokesperson, Tom Gasparoli
The warehouse owner, Mark Reisdorf claimed that the establishment did have a few mice, but he was told by the pest control company the establishment was pest free. The warehouse failed to receive its license to store food products when the check to the health department bounced. The building used to be a school, until purchased by Reisdof and changed into “Mid-States Closeouts.” The FDA closed the establishment.
A rodent infestation is not an acceptable to lose business like Mid-States Closeouts will. If you are a property owner or management company, please contact JP McHale Pest Management for a free consultation and to learn more about a custom Integrated Pest Management plan for your property.

Holiday Inn has announced that they are rolling out a new service in London and Manchester. The service?
Bed warmers.
Holiday Inn will send employees to your room before you get there to warm the bed up for you. This may seem a bit odd. The hotel chain says that it is easier to get to sleep when you are in a warm bed.
This is a problem. Hotel workers lying in customer beds before they come in will create a perfect environment to spread bed bugs. There is already a widespread problem in hotel rooms with spreading bed bugs. This service should be immediately discontinued, if the hotel chain wants to warm beds for customers they should install something in the bed that would automatically do the heating.

Over the past few weeks, pest control companies in Edinburg, Scotland have seen an increase in rodent calls outside restaurants and other types of food establishments. Why? The obvious reason is during the winter rodents will look for warmth and get inside homes. However the reason for this increase is because of icy roads. Town works are unable to access the trash bins so the trash is not removed. Trash removal is essential in keeping a pest free environment. Sometimes it is just not possible to control some factors, which we must work around to develop a unique program tailored to your needs. (Integrated Pest Management)
