Yesterday, the NY Times published an article about how some Germany airports test their air quality by using bees. The airports will close down the terminals and release up to 200,000 honeybees to fly around. Once the bees go back to the nest and produce honey, scientists will take the honey and test it to see how the air quality is. This method has been proven to be very effective. Scientists started this back in 2006 and the process has become a year routine. The first bees were tested this year was in early June. The results were pleasing. the number of toxins in the air were significantly lower than in 2006, and some people say even the honey is good!

When people go on longs flights, exceeding a few hours, the airlines provide the travelers with a prepared food meal. How do you know if the place where the food is made safe? The FDA recently inspected some of the top airline caterers and the buildings they use to prepare the food in. What they found is both surprising and disturbing. Inside the buildings the FDA discovered employees were handling food with their hands, there were dead and alive cockroaches, ants, and fleas, and some of the areas tested positive for harmful bacteria. After the discovery, a spokesperson said that the company was taking immediate measures for cleaning up the problem. Read the whole NY Post story. Today a local Rhode Island news paper published a story about how researchers from URI have noticed that there should be a decrease in ticks this year. They predict to see 20 to 25% less cases this year. That’s a pretty good number! A decrease in deer ticks means a decrease in Lymes Disease. A research lab at URI invests most of its time focusing on studying ticks. Scientists go around the state each year and focus on counting how many deer ticks they find state wide. Last year, since the summer was very moist, ticks lasted until August but scientists think the number of cases will decrease significantly. They still want people to be aware and take precautions so they will not get ticks. Wear long sleeved clothing when you are outside and repellent with 30% DEET. When you apply repellent, make sure you spray you sock and shoes. Researchers say you at 70% less likely to get bitten if you do so because tick crawl up your leg and then bit you. Recently, one of our techs was called out to do a termite service at one of our customers house. Since he was already there, our customer asked him to check the rodent trap too. When she turned on the light in the basement she screamed and said that there was something else in the trap and not a mouse. The tech looked and said that there was a mole in it. Once he told her she was ecstatic because she said that a mole had been eating all of her vegetable plants! A bed bug bill recently passed that makes NYC school districts alert parents when a student is found to have bed bugs on their clothes or in their backpack. This bill was first brought up in 2007 but congress ignored it, and finally passed it in 2010. The bill only applies to school districts with more than one million students. Hopefully this bill will expand to be applied to all schools, but for now only a few school districts are going to have to apply this rule. The problem is that the bill will not be effective probably until July 2011, after it is signed to a law. Bed bug infestations have been on the rise in recent years. Aol.com published a great article about how to tell if termites are infesting in your home. To start off, termites are small insects that eat materials containing cellulose such as wood, wallpaper, books, and sometimes cardboard boxes. Termites look like small, white ants that sometimes have wings. Termites and ants sometimes get confused with one another but termites will shed their wings once they find a colony, unlike ants. Here are some key indicators to know if you have a termite infestation:
Mud tunnels. Termites like to travel through tunnels to get back and forth from their food source. These mud tunnels will appear as a line of sawdust or sand on the wall. Usually termites eat wood close to the ground.
- Mud build-up. Usually found on the outside of homes, mud build up is another indicator.
- Softened wood. If you see cracks or crevasses in the wood that might me an indicator. Also, in you have wood floors and begin to see they are sinking or getting hollow, there is a chance termites might be living under the floor. You can check if the wood is hollowing by knocking on it.
Termites are a very big issue and you should take care of the issue right when you discover it. Termites cause billions of damage to home each year, so make sure you contact a pest control company at the first sight. JP McHale is a Westchester Pest Control company. A few days ago, BusinessWire posted an article about ants invading homes. Ants love to enter people’s homes, either for food, water, or shelter. Ants are a very big nuisance to people and they are very hard to control since they are small and usually travel in large numbers. People should be most concerned with these four types of ants:
Carpenter Ants: They tend to chew wood and cause destruction to your home.
Fire Ants: They tend to sting when their nest is disturbed and they will likely sting a few times rather than just one. The sting is pretty painful to humans.
Odorous House Ants: These ants give off a foul smell when squashed, so be careful which ants you want to step on!
Argentine Ants: They are known to contaminate food that they come in contact with.
There are some precautions you can take to prevent ants including the following:
- Eliminate water, do not leave small puddles around

- Keep all food sealed
- Make sure tree branches aren’t close to your home
- Keep all firewood away from the home
- Seal all cracks
Ant control can be a real hassle. Here at JP McHale, we offer treatments to control your ant problems. JP McHale is a Westchester Pest Control company. We would love to help you with your pest problem! Contact us by phone 800-479-2284, email, live chat, twitter, or facebook.
