In many countries bug eating is part of their culture. In Canada, a chef wrote a book called “The Eat-a-bug Cookbook.” This cookbook includes 33 recipes with recipes ranging from termites to dragonflies. The author, Viji has the only high-end restaurant in North America with insects on the menu.

Bed bugs are one of the hardest pests to control. Various treatments are possible for the hope to eliminate them. Many new methods are being implemented by pest control companies across the country. Due to the heavy rain, ants are increasing in numbers. The Washington post gives us a few tips on how to prevent ants using simple methods. Keeping a clean house, with food kept away, in zip-lock bags are a must. Ants are always looking for food. Keeping food in sealed containers will ensure they will not be able to access it. However, when the problem arises out of the kitchen to other parts of the house, it can be a problem. Carpenter ants can be wood destroying. If you notice saw dust, it would be in your best interest to call us and send an inspector out.

Wild dogs are a issue in the Philippines. Over 100 wild dogs stormed into a small city and brutally killed over 120 ducks. These dogs literally ripped the ducks apart, killing them. Citizens of the town tried to shoot the dogs, but they escaped promptly. The meat from the left over carcasses could have possibly been rabies infected, so the locals were not able to use the meat.

Today in California, the first death was reported of West Nile Virus this year. The horse was battling the disease for a while. The virus was transmitted by birds. The West Nile virus is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. The mosquitoes extract the virus out of birds, then possibly make their way to humans. Take all mosquito preventative measures this summer to insure you or your family does not encounter West Nile virus.

Warm air and lots of rain are perfect living conditions for mosquitoes. Fdlreporter.com gives us a lot of tips on how to control mosquitoes.

- Remain indoors from dawn to dusk. Early evening hours are peak mosquito feeding times.
- Wear light-colored clothing that covers arms and legs as well as the trunk.
- Use insect repellants recommended by the CDC (those containing DEET or picaridin). Use on both skin and clothing.
- Place mosquito netting over infant carriers when outdoors.
- Make sure window and door screens are in good shape to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
- Eliminate standing water around the home. Water gives mosquitoes a place to lay eggs and breed.
- Empty flowerpot saucers and buckets, clean gutters and drain swimming pool covers.
- Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs.
- Turn over wheelbarrows, wading pools and boats when not in use.
- Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are kept outdoors.
- Change water in birdbaths regularly.
- Remove discarded tires and other items that could collect water.
- Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property.
- Check under bushes and places around the house that may be hard to see for containers or trash.

A 74 year old man in Pakistan had a major ant problem. He got extremely angry and poured gallons of a type of ant-killer pesticide into the ventilation system. After receiving no immediate results he threw a towel that was on fire. Shortly after, a whole block of living space was destroyed. WOW!

The Food and Drug administration has seized control of a PETCO warehouse in Chicago. The FDA says that the warehouse has been infested with live and dead rodents, and in addition, birds and droppings near food containers. The warehouse was inspected in April where the management was notified of the problem. Now the inspectors came back and found no improvement. The FDA received a warrant and seized the food products in the warehouse. This was disgusting. FDA inspectors said there were openings in the warehouse were rodents and birds could have easily gotten in.

788 rats have been removed by a pest control company in Oregon. The town counsel has deemed the house a nuisance. Tee rats have been removed and the smell has improved. The pest control company said flies are still a problem. Check up dates have been arranged to insure the rodents will not return.
