“Our point is not to invade people’s houses or make them feel like their privacy is being invaded. It’s just to try to have an extra set of eyes and ears out there,” Truley Nolen worker Ronnie Rachels said

Was it caused by rodents?

Posted on January 30, 2008 with No Comments

“FERNLEY, Nev. — An irrigation canal’s earthen levee ruptured after heavy rains early Saturday, flooding hundreds of homes and forcing the rescue of dozens of people in helicopters and boats across about a square mile of Fernley, 30 miles east of Reno.

Officials did not know what caused the levee’s collapse, although some suggested that burrowing rodents could have contributed to the break in the levee along with the heavy rains.

Ernie Schank, president of the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District, suggested the break may have started with rodent burrowing that weakened the canal’s earthen bank. ”

Think twice about the next time you want to complain about rodents chewing wires in your home or leaving droppings in your silverware drawer. Not only do they cause damage to your home, look at the devastation they can cause on a much wider scale. I don’t think people really put that enough emphasis on what types of damage rodents can potentially inflict. Perhaps it would have helped these displaced people if the engineers who designed this levee, thought more about the natural inhabitants. Sometimes it helps to think outside the box.

Will Deer Management Reduce Lyme?

Posted on January 25, 2008 with No Comments

“It’s something whose time has come,” said Scholl, a Redding resident. “There’s nothing that’s been attempted that has successfully reduced Lyme disease.”

Natalie Jarnstedt, a Greenwich resident, has organized local efforts to oppose the killing of deer and other animals.

“It would be irresponsible to raise people’s hopes on reducing the incidence of Lyme disease,” she said.

This is totally barbaric and it may not even help there problem. Studies that have been done on Lyme disease state that Lyme can be spread through various other small animals such as mice and chipmunks. If they proceed with this deer kill, are they going to put a huge fence across the state of Connecticut to prevent any additional deer from entering the area.

The smart approach for people who are concerned about Lyme disease would be to hire a professional company to treat there property for ticks. At J.P. McHale Pest Management, we provide various regular services to help combat this ever growing problem.

Mice vs. Scorpion who wins?

Posted on January 21, 2008 with No Comments

How to kill a mouse or so you would think! Of course not all mice will try to eat scorpions but when it comes to getting a meal they will take advantage of all your home has to offer. Telltale signs of rodents’ gnawing may be seen on packaged goods, cardboard boxes, and walls near pipes and vents.

“Inside, rodents can be very destructive. They chew through wallboards and can eat through cardboard boxes, wood, and plaster. Rodents may come in through almost any opening – pet doors, holes in walls, missing vent screens, openings around pipes, dryer ducts vents, etc. ”

“The roof may also be a handy highway into your home. Rats can climb plants or trees that are too close to the house. That’s where roof rats get their name. Mice can squeeze through spaces as small as a nickel. Rats can squeeze through a space as small as a half dollar.”

New England Centipedes

Posted on January 17, 2008 with No Comments

Have you seen this in your house?

The house centipede, when fully grown, has an average of 15 pairs of very long, delicate legs and a rigid body, which enables it to run with surprising speed up walls and along ceilings and floors. Its body is yellowish grey and has three dark-colored dorsal stripes running down its length; the legs also have dark stripes. Unlike most other centipedes, house centipedes and their close relatives have well-developed, faceted eyes.

Remains of Immense Rodent Discovered

Afraid of mice? Read this and see what our predecessors could have possibly been dealing with.

“For those afraid of rodents, forget hopping on a chair. Its huge skull, more than 20 inches long, suggested a beast more than eight feet long and weighing between 1,700 and 3,000 pounds”

“Eeek! Imagine a rodent that weighed a ton and was as big as a bull. ”

“A herbivore, the beast may have been a contemporary, and possibly prey, of saber-toothed cats – a prehistoric version of Tom and Jerry.”

“These are totally different from the rats and mice we’re accustomed to,” said Bruce Patterson, the curator of mammals at the Field Museum in Chicago, adding that it was the biggest rodent he had ever heard of.”

New York City’s Rat Master

Posted on January 15, 2008 with 1 Comment

As written in the New York Post, Bobby Corrigan smells a rat.

“As the country’s leading rodent expert and New York City’s newest fulltime employee he walks the street of the Bronx and points out all signs of rats.”

“Some of the ways to identify if there is rodent activity at your home would be small burrows in front yards, gnawed trash bags and teeth marks in garbage pails.”

“There are definitely rats here,” he says, pointing out low shrubbery and lines of parked cars, all cover for the rodents”
